Chapter Eight
The next morning, the village horn sounded as everyone prepared themselves for their assignments. I threw my feet to the floor as I sat up on the side of bed. As the sun was beaming through the shades of the window, it took me a while to adjust my eyes to the lighting. Focusing my mind on the day ahead, I suddenly realized that I felt very wet and damp.
Panicking, I turned to look at the bedding to find it completely covered in what I perceived to be water. I had not wet the bed since I was a young boy. Wetting the bed was the very last thing I was expected to do at my age. I quickly gathered the bedding and began to ball it up so I could give them a good wash later. While gathering the sheets, I noticed that certain spots were not wet at all. In fact, I was astonished to find that the wetness occurred in a shape matching the outline of my own body. I decided to hide the sheets to give them a good smell to better understand the substance that now soaked my bed. Totally distraught, I had to confide in someone not only about the bedding, but also about the words that Sacrees and I shared last night. I decided to skip morning meal to see Janson at his assignment in the garden field before I was due at the village gates. After all, I wanted to see how Janson was doing with his new assignment.
I went straight to Braga's garden where I knew Janson would be. While walking, I was thinking about what possibly could have made the bed wet. I finally reached the garden, which was breathtaking. Truly a patch of land that all of our village could be proud of! It seemed as if every fruit were always in bloom here and each color had a taste of its own. I saw Jansonâs arm expand to the top of tree, grabbing the oranges that had grown high. Janson was a natural. As he picked high with one hand, he would release them catching them with the other hand and placed them in the bucket below. I stood for a moment and watched, as he didn't notice me there. The other gardeners were happy that he was a part of their assignments, for no one else in our village was assigned there with the Expan gifts. â
"Toss an orange over here!" I shouted, finally making my presence known.
Janson looked over and smiled as he was excited to see me. "Sure! CATCH!" he shouted as he launched an orange from top of the tree. Luckily, I was able to catch it, for the sun was beaming behind it, as my eyes followed the orange falling from the sky.
âGood throw, but I need to have words with you. Quickly, come here.â
âHow are you, my friend? What brings you here?"
âWell, I came to see how you were doing. Also, I had to talk with you,â I whispered.
